Hpattern Supra Build

25.3 Supra chassis part two

How is this for an update???!!!

Doug at Precision Chassis is really making amazing progress on project Hpattern! The main hoop is done as well as the halo bar is seeing good progress. The rear section is almost 100% as well. This is going to be one bad ass machine!

25.3 Supra chassis part one

Here are the first shots of the 25.3 chassis being done for me by Doug Kline at Precision Chassis.

Doug is using Docol R8 tube on this chassis. This will be the first car he does in full Docol vs using the typical chromoly tube. Docol R8 is the same weight as 4130 chromoly but it welds better, and does not become brittle like chromoly can when it sees too much heat. Pretty cool!

You can also see pictures of where Doug is repairing and reinstalling the stock floor in order to meet rules.

Primering the chassis

In order to keep surface rust at bay, I wanted to get the car in primer before it goes to the chassis shop. I talked to a local friend Rob Rhodes, and he recommended a friend of his Andrew Long.

Andrew did a great job getting the car prepped and sprayed. He went above and beyond, spending a lot of extra time helping to blow all the sand out of the car before we sprayed it.

After getting the primer on, I spent some time tearing down a spare motor I had in the shop to use for mock up purposes. I used a set of stock mounts, and put the stock front subframe back in the car. I also put the stock doors on the car in preparation for the trip to the chassis shop.

Next stop, 25.3 chassis!

Sandblasting Project Hpattern Supra

Hpattern is all about being as light as possible... so all the undercoating has to go bye bye! I can't really say how much weight this takes off, but it should be a decent amount. the undercoating is really heavy in some areas, up to 1/4" thick in the corners and mainly about 1/16" across the majority of the bottom of the car.

The only downside to sandblasting is cleaning out all the sand from the unibody after its done. This seems like a never ending task, the sand just keeps coming back again and again. Thanks to Eric Ritchey for helping me get the car cleaned up and ready for primer!!

Thanks to Eric Ritchey in Woodbury, PA for taking on this project and getting it complete so quickly. A one-day turnaround!
